Cancer Prevention through Exercise

Tiny, daily choices determine whether your body fuels prevention or fuels cancer. It may now be possible to unlock cancer prevention through exercise at just 10 minutes a day. Grab your sneakers, leggings, or sweatpants, and let’s dig into how exercise fuels cancer prevention.

It’s been almost 10 years since the strongest scientific evidence was published that high levels of physical activity help in cancer prevention [1]. With high levels of physical activity, the risk of cancer is reduced by 10 – 20% for the following cancers:
  • Breast
  • Endometrial
  • Colon
  • Bladder
  • Kidney
  • Gastric
  • Esophageal
And this high level of physical activity is important for cancer survivors, as the study found an approximately 40% lower risk of cancer in this group of patients. But how exactly does exercise help in cancer prevention?

Exerkines, Your Best Friend in Cancer Prevention

The scientific evidence points to what’s known as “exercise-induced molecules” called “exerkines” that are released and circulate in the bloodstream during exercise. These exerkines are involved in the following:
  • Repairing damaged DNA
  • Increases in molecules (IL-6, interleukin 6) that reduce cell proliferation (i.e., rapid cell growth) and DNA damage
The current theory on cancer development is that damaged DNA causes cells to go “haywire,”which results in cells dividing uncontrollably, leading to tumors and cancer spreading (i.e., metastasizing) to other parts of the body.

Cancer Prevention with Exercise

A recent study found that when participants were asked to exercise vigorously for 8 – 10 minutes on an exercise bike, and then had blood samples taken, the blood from these participants had cancer prevention effects on colon cancer cells:
  • Damaged DNA was repaired due to an increase in DNA repair molecules
  • Improved mitochondrial function occurred (the mitochondria are cellular organelles responsible for energy metabolism)
  • Reduced cell proliferation [2]
One of the researchers of the study, Dr. Orange of Newcastle University, stated:  “Even a single workout can make a difference. One bout of exercise, lasting just 10 minutes, sends powerful signals to the body. “It’s a reminder that every step, every session, counts when it comes to doing your best to protect your health.” [3]
