In the United States, cancer patients had a $21 billion economic burden associated with their cancer care. [11] This consists of $16.2 billion in out-of-pocket expenses and $4.87 billion attributed to patient time (e.g., time spent traveling to, waiting for, and receiving healthcare). 

And once the treatment has ended the financial impact does not stop there. The CDC estimates that 30% of cancer survivors cannot return to work or have a decreased ability to work after their treatment has ended.  In addition, cancer survivors had to significantly scale back their leisure activities, withdraw savings, or sell their possessions to meet these financial obligations.
